What Is a Prayer Rug (Prayer Mat)?
A prayer rug (prayer mat) is a clean, specially woven rug used for prostration during prayer. Traditional prayer rugs feature an arched motif at the center representing the mihrab niche, which symbolizes the direction of the qibla in a mosque. The rug is positioned so that the tip of the mihrab faces the qibla, making it easier for the person praying to orient themselves. The standard single-person prayer mat size of 80 x 125 cm provides enough space for the head, hands, and knees to rest comfortably during prostration. The mihrab pattern in the Topkapı Prayer Rug Collection features finely crafted motifs of oil lamps (mosque lamps), columns, and flowers drawn from traditional Ottoman-Turkish carpet art. These centuries-old motifs give the prayer rug both spiritual meaning and aesthetic depth, making the Topkapı Prayer Rug an elegant choice for daily prayer, trousseaus, and gifts.
What Is Viscose?
Viscose is a fiber derived from natural sources, made from the cellulose of trees and plants. Since natural cellulose is processed and regenerated into fiber during production, it is also known as “regenerated cellulose fiber.” It stands out for its silk-like softness, natural sheen, and silky surface that reflects light. Unlike fully synthetic fibers such as acrylic or polypropylene, viscose reflects light at multiple angles, creating a vibrant sheen that shifts with movement, and becomes softer with use. In the Topkapı Prayer Rug Collection, 100% viscose is combined with a dense weave of 2,000,000 knots to create a fine, lustrous, highly detailed surface. The sheen of viscose brings out the fine details and color transitions of the classic mihrab pattern, especially in well-lit spaces.

What Size Is the Topkapı Prayer Rug?

How Do You Clean a Viscose Prayer Rug?
Topkapı Prayer Rugs made from 100% viscose should only be cleaned by professional rug-cleaning companies. Since viscose is a naturally derived (regenerated) cellulose fiber, it is sensitive to water and excessive moisture. Please avoid machine washing, washing at home with detergent, scrubbing with a wet brush, and steam cleaning. For everyday care, use a low-suction vacuum cleaner and gently dab any stains with a slightly damp cloth. When storing the prayer rug for an extended period, fold it and keep it in a dry place away from direct sunlight to preserve its silky sheen, fine pattern, and vibrant colors for a long time.
Add elegance, luxury, and spiritual serenity to your prayer space with the Topkapı Prayer Rug, a shimmering 100% viscose prayer mat featuring a red arabesque mihrab pattern. You can return it unconditionally within 14 days of delivery. For more options, browse our prayer rugs and densely woven rugs collections.

Protect Its Elegance
To preserve the original splendor and silky texture of Carpetdocia’s handwoven creations made with natural fibers—which add value to your living space—for generations, a careful care routine is essential.
Immediate Action and Liquid Spills
When a liquid spills, timing is critical. Using a clean, slightly damp cloth, blot the liquid gently from the surface without rubbing. Always work in the direction of the rug’s pile (the natural direction in which the fibers lie). Rubbing can damage the shape of delicate fibers such as TENCEL™ and viscose. If in doubt, stop immediately.
Routine Care and Light Balance
For your weekly cleaning routine, always use a vacuum cleaner with low suction. High-powered upright vacuums and stiff brushes can damage the natural structure of handwoven yarns. To balance how natural yarns react to light and prevent uneven changes in color (fading), we recommend rotating your rug every 2 to 6 months.
Expert Care (Professional Cleaning)
Fine textures such as handwoven fibers, TENCEL™, viscose, and New Zealand wool should not come into contact with household chemical cleaners. These products can irreversibly damage the rug’s silky sheen and structural integrity. For a thorough clean, seek help only from professional rug care centers specializing in natural fibers.
Washing Instructions
Due to their construction, the exceptional pieces in Carpetdocia collections are not suitable for machine washing. (Only our specific models explicitly marked “Washable” in their names can be washed in household machines on a low-temperature, delicate cycle.)
